So to a new Bond character as portrayed by Daniel Craig. Craig is not as slick as the other actors that have portraied Bond, he is in fact more rough and ready than Sean Connery and as it was reported then Ian Fleming had concerns that he wasn't smooth enough. Having read quite a few of the books you have to say that Daniel Craig isn’t really at this stage at least the character that Fleming envisaged Bond to be. The Bond in the books is altogether more arrogant more, materialistic, less likeable and probably better looking. Craig does come across as tough though and that was certainly a Bond characteristic. I can’t get the memory of Craig as he appeared in "Our Friends in the North" out of my mind though, he was basically a tramp/derelict in that and he played it well. That said I think Craig makes a good Bond in this well written and directed movie. I am defiantly over the bond moves of the 80’s & 90’s, they took the escapism and comedy way too far in my opinion and Pierce Brosnan came across as about as tough as a newly picked lettuce. This movie has both escapism and comedy but it’s more about action and more (by degree) true to the story line. Casino Royale takes the Bond character to his early days before he takes on the revered double O position. In this Bond is, reckless, unrefined, rough, aggressive and less invincible and more injury prone than before. He is cold blooded killer. He is already highly trained but he has much to learn and as the film goes on he gains that experience and becomes well worthy of the 00 status. The journey it takes him to get there is a great deal of fun to watch. The movie moves away from the traditional Bond flicks of days gone by in those he was already accomplished and it was with few exceptions taken for granted that he could emotionally cope with his missions Casino Royale goes deeper than that, after all what type of man could cope long term with the pressure. His metal is tested so often, he’s beaten up, stabbed, poisoned and tortured. He is detached from the reality of what we might consider a normal life. He clearly prefers rich married women as they are to him less complicated and after little more than just sex. He apparently has no family and is unlikely to have any friends and he likes it that way. These are things that qualify him for the OO status. If you’re a Bond fan watch this movie if your not a bond fan also watch this movie. If you have any preconceived ideas about the genera leave them at home. But if you for some reason that I can’t conceive dislike action movies stay at home.
