Mr Beans Holiday

Ok Cards on the table, I thought this movie was going to be crap. Mr. Bean has been on our screens for so long, now that the initial eyes glued to the set “what the heck was that isn’t it amazing” reaction, has turned into “oh no not again can’t he think of something new”

But after seeing this movie the spark has reignited, I still can’t bring myself to watch the old Mr. Bean TV episodes but this movie was worth seeing. It’s very funny and is a feel good movie; I walked out feeling good.

They started this movie with a clean platter, the first movie tried unsuccessfully to use sketches from the TV series and it failed, but they didn’t make that mistake with this one.

The story starts with Mr. Bean winning a ticket to Cannes in a local town raffle, where he accidentally separates a young boy from his father. Obviously being the kind chap that he is Mr. Bean must help the kid find his dad again.

The story is really irrelevant though it’s just a stage on which Mr Bean demonstrates his ungainly antics, sometimes clever but more often painfully inept, and always funny. Oh my the situations he gets himself into.

Rowan Atkinson is at his best in this he has developed his character to absolute perfection no one else could play this character. His style knocks Jim Carrey for six in my opinion but then I never really found him very funny anyway, but each to their own.

The exaggerated body language, the facial expressions, and the convincing feeling that you get from Bean, We have all been as stupid as Mr Bean at sometime but hoped nobody noticed. Rowan Atkinson is a genius and, like most great comedians, they rarely get the recognition they deserves until sometimes too late.

The rest of the cast is good as well, Willem Dafoe plays an art gallery director with a ridiculously huge ego, and he performed the part excellently. But as it should be Mr Bean stole the show, as expected he carries the entire movie as he should have done in the first movie.

This is not American style humor there are no farting jokes and general toilet humor and there is a lack of throwing up. That humor is fine sometimes but it has no place here. The movie isn’t exactly intellectually stimulating but it is one that the whole family can safely enjoy and definitely not just the kids. It has the odd flat spot but they don’t last long.

I loved the scene with the French moped where Bean steals the bike, as he "races" off the owner casually walks past him and pulls him off the very low powered machine.

The critics seemed to dislike this movie, so maybe I never will make a main stream movie reviewer, or maybe they just didn’t watch it, I liked it a lot !!!.
